As a part of their current unit of study, our 4th grade students are using stream table models to observe how the process of erosion carves out rivers, and how rivers carry and deposit sediment. These students will tour the LSU Center for River Studies in October. They will walk part of the Mississippi levee to observe the Mississippi River. At the center, LSU scientists use a similar model, but on a grander scale, to study sediment flow and possible solutions to wetland loss.
Ms. Clare's kindergarten students returned from a long weekend to find several monarch butterflies had emerged from their chrysalis! Each time a butterfly emerges (usually it's one at a time) they have a releasing ritual. They also participate in the Monarch Watch with the University of Kansas. This citizen science project requires the students to harvest caterpillars from host plants, watch the metamorphosis of the butterflies, tag the butterflies, record the data and release them. The information is used to track and gain information about monarch numbers and migration. Special thanks to Taylor Gast with EBR Communications for stopping by to participate!
This Friday, September 27th, WHAM will team up with Team Ian and St. Jude for a PBIS with a Purpose. All WHAM students and staff will be allowed to wear their favorite team shirt and any bottom for a $1 donation. All proceeds collected will go to St. Jude in the name of Team Ian. At 2:00 pm, we will line up our students and participate in a school-wide walk around the soccer field in honor of Ian.
