Our fourth-graders supercharged their standardized test-taking skills with academic stations and physical games during the school’s annual LEAP Olympics. Students were divided into Red, Blue, Yellow, Green and Orange teams, each taking practice tests on LEAP subject areas and participating in games.
This was an exciting opportunity for our students as we continue to SOAR. Thanks to all the teachers and parents for making this event a success. Moonlight in the Gardens has become one of our favorite WHAM family nights. Our families had an opportunity to enjoy the music sounds of Baton Rouge Music Studio and WHAM alumnus Sam Short performing with the band Frostbite. Whether it was from a food truck (Mr. Ronnies Hot Donuts and Hamburgers, Geaux-Yo Frozen Yogurt) or a picnic brought from home, the food was delicious. The evening was filled with music, food, friendship, and fellowship!
On any given morning in Mrs. Johnson's kindergarten class you can find her students reading and taking Accelerated Reader comprehension test. Throughout the school year, with literacy at the forefront of learning, Mrs. Johnson has helped her students to develop a passion and love for reading. According to their independent reading logs the students have read 1232 books this year!
At WHAM our 3rd - 5th grade students have become very proficient with the recorder. Students have been working through a recorder unit of study and progressing through one of eight levels of mastery. In a recent lesson, the 4th grade music students used a familiar melody of Hot Cross Buns and a newly learned descant to accompany. The students used a performance planning checklist to plan small group presentations for their class. Each group presented and received feedback from their peers. A "rockin" recorder time was had by all!
